Riverside Tappahannock Hospital

Riverside Tappahannock Hospital leadership had a vision to take an existing series of rooms located in the center of the rural hospital and convert them into a single, open infusion center. The project required removing load-bearing walls and, in their place, installing new steel beams to support the roof load. Significant excavation of the 1960s-era hospital was required to add drain plumbing. Removal of material and debris had to be done through an active hospital corridor without interrupting the medical teams or patient experience; a full-time cleaning person was kept on-site to constantly clean the floors and facilitate traffic flow through the hallways. Some unforeseen building issues caused the schedule to delay, but collaboration between parties minimized the impact to the timeline. Teamwork and focused project management resulted in the creation of an open, naturally lit, and tranquil environment for patients in need of intravenous care.
