7 Prerequisites that Led to the UR’s Robins Stadium LEED Silver Certification

University of Richmond’s Robins Stadium was designed and built using the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) rating standards with a goal of earning their Silver rating. Construction began December 20, 2008, the day after the University of Richmond won the NCAA National Football Championship. The stadium was completed in September 2010.
About Robins Stadium
Robins Stadium was the first-ever football stadium on the University of Richmond campus with a total building area of 67,480 square feet. On October 20, 2011 Robins Stadium was proud to achieve its LEED “Silver” certification. LEED has a project checklist that assigns points to different initiatives. While some standards are required, projects can choose which areas they want to focus on depending on the level of LEED certification they are striving for.The following describes the intent of the different LEED prerequisites and how Robins Stadium met these standards.

1. Sustainable sites
The Sustainable Sites prerequisite encourages minimizing impact on ecosystems and water resources. After choosing an appropriate site for the stadium, Robins Stadium wanted to be sure the stadium connected with the community. It focused on providing alternative forms of transportation such as access to public transportation, changing rooms and bicycle storage and preferred parking for car pools and hybrids.Other initiatives included restoration of the habitat, maximizing open space and quality control of storm water. Robins Stadium used a “cool roof” to reflect light instead of absorbing solar energy, helping reduce the “heat island effect.”
2. Water Efficiency
The Water Efficiency prerequisite focuses on reducing the burden on potable water supply and wastewater systems. Robins Stadium uses 43% less water than the LEED code minimum. This was achieved by installing low-flow water fixtures and artificial turf.  Further, the stadium reduced its water usage by 30% and eliminated the use of irrigation.
3. Energy & Atmosphere
In order to verify that building systems and assemblies are performing as intended to meet sustainability requirements, the Energy and Atmosphere prerequisite focuses are several areas. Robins Stadium optimized its energy performance over the baseline by 14%. It enhanced its building commissioning as requirement of the prerequisite.
4. Materials & Resources
One of the main focuses of LEED is to establish minimum source reduction and recycling program elements and quantify waste stream production volume.  The stadium diverted 75% of construction waste from landfills and used certified wood by the FSC (Forestry Stewardship Council). At least 10% of all materials were to be recycled content, which included 90% of the aluminum bleachers being from recycled materials.  Also, 42% of all materials were extracted, processed and manufactured within 500 miles of the site.
5. Indoor Environmental Quality
This prerequisite focuses on enhancing indoor air quality in buildings to contribute to the health and well being of the occupants. Hourigan implemented an indoor air quality management plan during construction and before occupancy. Robins Stadium has low-emitting VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) materials such as adhesive sealants and paint.The stadium also has indoor chemical and pollutant source control as well as control of lighting systems.  Lastly, there are views from 90% of all “regularly” occupied spaces.
6. Innovation in Operation, Upgrades and Maintenance
The intent of this prerequisite is to provide building operation, design teams and project the opportunity to receive points for exceptional or innovative performance in green building. Robins Stadium incorporated several iniatives such as green housekeeping and pest management. The stadium is used for education of sustainable building practices and had exemplary use of regional materials.
