Living Building Challenge
The Brock Environmental Center in Virginia Beach, is the first LBC project in Virginia and aims to be one of the first certified on the East Coast.
The Living Building Challenge (LBC), a program of the International Living Future Institute, is a certification program that defines the most advanced measure of sustainability in the built environment. Projects that achieve this level of performance can claim to be the ‘greenest’ anywhere and will serve as role models for future construction.
To qualify as a Living Building, the project must adhere to specific regulations within seven primary sustainable design categories, known as “Petals” in regard to the International Living Future Institute’s dandelion logo, which include the following: Site, Water, Energy, Health, Materials, Equity, and Beauty. Certification is based on actual performance, so projects must meet all criteria for twelve consecutive months of operation before the process can be completed.
